A Boys’ Weekend Away in Margaret River

Wineries Breweries Margaret River Cider Beer Wine Tasting Private Guided Tours

From beer tastings to surf trips, fishing expeditions and adventure activities, pack a guys’ break to the Margaret River region with as much action as one can handle.

Here’s just a small selection of the things to do on a trip down south with the boys with the help of Margies Big Day Out – A leading beer and wine tour operator with all the insight needed to make a weekend work in one’s favour.

Beer Tastings

“Although the region is most famous for the superb wine it produces, the local beer is just as delicious. There are several great breweries in Margaret River, most of which offer free tastings, great food and space to kick a footy around between rounds, but hopping onboard one of our tours means a tailored experience that visits the best places in the region and no driving is required. That way, the taps can keep filling up those pint glasses,” says Russell Hogan, owner of Margies Big Day Out.

The local angling spots are nationally renowned with opportunities to fish from the golden sand of a beach, off a jetty or on a full day deep sea fishing trip. The waters are great for herring, snapper, black bream and marron – It is a great way to barbecue on the spot while enjoying some local beers and make a day of it!

Action and Adventure

“Rock climbing, abseiling, surfing, bush walking, mountain biking…There is so much to choose from in this region,” shares Russell. The natural scenery and fresh salty air are a huge draw card for anyone who loves adventure in the Great Outdoors. Depending on the season, there are many local sporting events that take place which can tie in with a weekend itinerary.

Surfing is part of Margaret River culture and at Cowaramup one can hit the surf or take in the local talent with a coffee and toastie in-hand from nearby hotspot White Elephant; the cafe with the best brew and bread in the country.

Dry off from a morning in the water and hit the unbeaten path on foot to explore the incredible wildlife and surrounding national park of Margaret River. “There’s a great trail that stretches from Cape Naturaliste to Sugarloaf Rock and covers about 3.5km portion of the 137km Cape to Cape Track,” says Russell.

With all that outdoor hustle, the appetite usually does demand attention. Head on over to the Eagle Bay Brewing pub and sit down for what may be the best burger in the west. The restaurant and brewery are set on a working farm that overlooks the bushland and parts of the Indian Ocean. It is probably the best spot to wind down as Saturday evening creeps closer.

When it comes time to choose where to rest for the night, the region has everything from beach-side campsites for the keen surfer and fisherman, to million-dollar houses and luxury resorts for the low-key.

For those looking to stay close to the beach in the heart of the action, Pullman Bunker Bay offers a villa-style resort just metres from the protected waters of Bunker Bay. Further down south and slightly further inland from the beach, Losari Retreat sits on 66 acres of private, tranquil forest and gardens. With just six private villas, it’s a paradise for nature lovers and those looking for a quiet getaway for the weekend.

It’s as good a time as any to hit the road with the boys, but Margaret River is a place where a few days will feel like weeks.
