The Perfect Girls’ Weekend Away with Margies Big Day Out
The Margaret River region is one of the most popular destinations in Western Australia and has been at the forefront of all things getaway with its outstanding wineries, stunning beaches, natural wonders and unique landmarks. The best time to visit this little gem is probably during the summer, but the shoulder season works well too.
To explore an underrated part of the world on a girls’ weekend away, make Margaret River the first place of choice. With the help of Russell Hogan, the owner of Margies Big Day Out (a trusted beer & wine day tour operator in the region), there is probably too much to squeeze into one weekend, but maybe this inspires return visits to the place that leaves many a heart aflutter.
- Sip, Sip Hooray!
Let’s start with the obvious: The 95 cellar doors that placed dear old Margaret River on the map. The first commercial grapevines only date back to 1967, but the array of microclimates of this region has helped forge a stellar reputation as one of Australia’s most diverse and valuable wine regions.
Margies Big Day Out is a wine lover’s delight as guests smell, swirl and taste their way from one boutique winery to the next. Their tour also includes a few pit-stops at breweries and beer gardens; plus chocolate and cheese tastings that end with a gourmet lunch. It doesn’t get better than this…especially when one considers the beautifully manicured settings of this destination.
- Hit the Beach
This is the perfect opportunity to use #wanderlust in an Instagram post. Sunsets by the Margaret River coastline are epic and unforgettable. Hire a SUP and cruise the turquoise waters of Prevelly or Meelup Beach. Gaze upon Sugarloaf Rock right in the middle of the ocean or sign up for some surfing lessons with Margaret River Surf School. There’s a reason why surfing is a way of life down there because Russell adds that it’s ‘tough to leave the water because it’s so clear and temperate.’ No more words needed.
- Become Lara Croft
Margaret River’s mesmerising beauty goes below the surface of the earth, with over 150 limestone caves waiting to be explored beneath the Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park. Sprawling, ancient chambers such as the Mammoth Cave and Ngilgi are open to the public where legends about the battle between good and evil spirits forged a path for Indigenous culture.
- Remember the Greens
When the time comes to balance all the carbs out, grab something healthy at the Margaret River Farmers’ Market. “There’s a bounty of fresh fruit and vegetables to shop for at the Margaret River Education Campus every Saturday morning,” says Russell.
But the shopping experience doesn’t end there. Local produce such as seafood, grass-fed beef and lamb, organic dairy, bread cheeses and a wide array of artisanal goods are sold directly from the source.
While on the path to greener pastures, zen out for an hour or so. In a town full of yogis, there are all sorts of classes for yoga bunnies to flex their muscles before wine tasting at noon.
- Movie Night
Not indoors, though. Outdoor movies are a summertime ritual and it’s a great way to wind down after a day of fun in the sun. Movies under the starry night skies are available at Cape Mentelle and Caves House in Yallingup, but before the clock strikes 12, head out for a few cocktails at Yonder.
To wrap all of these experiences together, opt for Lakeside glamping at Olio Bello in Cowaramup. This perfectly-located spot offers 6 glamping tents only 10 minutes away from the town. The tents are luxurious, spacious and fantastic for ladies looking to retreat into nature and experience the picturesque beauty of this location.
